Google ChromeOn September 2, 2008 Google released their own web browser, Google Chrome. This browser was built from scratch and is designed to be faster, safer, and better for running web applications. I have been using Chrome for several days now and I am very pleased. The first difference I noticed was the minimalist interface. There is no menu bar, so there is more space for content. Also, the address bar doubles as your search bar, further simplifying the layout. Another nice feature is how the tabs are designed. When you open a new tab it displays thumbnails of your most visited sites. At first I didn't think this would be that great of a feature, but after a few days it has become one of my favorite aspects of this browser. In addition, the tabs function independently, meaning that if one page crashes it doesn't take all your other pages down with it. The tabs can also be dragged into their own window, or you can drag an open chrome tab in one window and drop it into another.

While Google put a lot of time into the user interface, I understand that the gave just as much attention the the behind-the-scenes processes. Chrome was designed with the future of the internet in mind - running web applications, not just displaying information. As I mentioned, it is faster and more crash-resistant. Additionally, it uses the WebKit rendering enging which will encourage developers to develop more cross-platform applications (Information Week Sept. 8, 2008).

Google Chrome is still in Beta, so there are bound to be updates, but for personal use I would encourage you to check it out
